Sketch Cards Giveaway!

Before I go on about the sketch cards that I am giving out this Wednesday at Silver Snail Comics, I need everyone to stay calm and time well spent...

That's right episode 7 is here! We take a look at all the news from San Diego Comic Con, as well as Spotlight on Fatale (which I am reading right now, and damn it is good) and on Marvel Now's New Avengers. Then in reviews, we look at Revival, which is an amazing little series about the living and the undead. So gives us a watch, like, comment and subscribe to the Maddsketch channel. And spread the word as well, episode 8 will be up later on this week. But yeah, let us know what you think.

Okay so back to those sketch cards. Yes I will be giving away four sketch cards to the first four who purchase anything from my table, a sketch or a cover or even one of my Bizzaro prints. These are fully inked and colored sketch cards, and would usually go for about 10 bucks or so, but I want to throw one in as a thank you to you, so with out anymore delay here are the four cards available...

Step by Sketch: Shazam

It's a funny thing isn't? The first blog I did in this format, a step by step tutorial on my process of going through a sketch card, I was drawing Black Adam. I am back again doing another one of these and the character I chose is none other then Captain Marvel, better known as Shazam. So I am taking care of both the magical titans of Shazam, which is has been a lot of fun to draw both these iconic characters. A lot of great stories with these guys, especially the DC comic classics Kingdom Come and Justice. I highly recommend you pick this up when you get the chance. So without further adieu, let's get sketching...

Step 1: Just sketch, pencil to paper and start drawing. I want to give the feeling here of Shazam being a big and strong hero but with a very happy and cheerful attitude, his inner Billy Bastion if you will. He had to be big though, like larger than life kind of hero, the storm in the background just solidifies his power. Whenever you approach any of these kind of works, you want to have an idea of what you're going to be drawing, it doesn't have to be exact and you can change things up as you go, that's why we got the eraser. 

Step 2: Now this is me trying something a little different, I am just experimenting with this. For this one I wanted to try colouring it first, before I inked. It usually goes the other way around, and I highly suggest to stick to that routine. I went with the classic colours on Shazam, the red and yellow, but I wanted to throw in a little bit of gold in the mix. I chose a dark navy sky instead of an entirely black sky, cause I felt that Shazam is a bright happy go lucky kind of hero, he's not exactly the dark knight or anything like that. Again nothing to out of the normal here in regards to colours, but always be open to experimenting with colours and characters, you'll never know what you will create, so be creative.

Step 3: The final step here, the inks. Again I wanted to try something different, so I went over the lines with the ink after the colour, but it's highly suggested to stick to usually format. I wanted to bring out the bolt on him more then anything in the picture, as well as the bolts in the background. 

And that is final piece, hurray!

The Black Adam Song...

Today I wanted to share with everyone a little play by play on a simple little sketch card. So if you don't know, sketch cards are pretty big in our SP circle. It's a great way to create original art for the fans, and there are a few collectors as well who enjoy having original works. The challenge being that on these cards your space is limited when compared to a large canvas or even a regular sheet of paper, so you need to know how to place your character and what to do with the space you have. But it's always fun to work on one of these in between different projects or commissions, they shouldn't take you anymore then half an hour or so, depending how much you want to do with the card. So I want to show you how each stage goes in the process of bringing a sketch card to life, and today's character is no other then Captain Marvel's main foe, Black Adam. SHAZAM! 

Step 1: You of course need to select the character you want to draw and then you need to choose where and how much do you want to show of said character. For this one, I picked Black Adam and I wanted to focus on giving him just a plain old super mean face, like this man is pissed. I didn't want to spend too much time on the pencils, cause a lot that would bring this particular card to life is going to be the inks. No point in wasting time on some lines that may not be seen, but of course you can totally choose to be more detailed oriented if you want to be, it's all up to you.

Step 2: Here is the first step in the inking process, go over the lines and makes sure to add weight to the lines to that you want to make darker to highlight more importance. You can also add more lines, like I did here on the face to add the emotion of anger in Black Adam's face. After you add most the ink over the lines you want, you need to erase the lines you don't need anymore. You can ignore this part as well if you choose to, but erasing the lines will give your card a cleaner look. 






Step 3: Filling up all the blank spaces on the drawing with as much as black as you want, this would also be time for color if you were going to do just that. In this case I wanted to keep it just to black and white, but I can totally come back to this piece and color it in later if I feel the need to. I also added a grey border around the character to give it a more in your face effect. But this is strictly a thing that I do, it's up to you to choose what you want to do with any and everyone of your pieces. 






 
And the final product after this is done may or may not look something a little like this, finished Black Adam.

Sat-Off-Day

Is there anything greater than a day off? I doubt it, it's one of life's little pleasure but you do need to work for it. And well, technically I was doing some work today in form of my art work. I started off the morning pretty late, but hey, I had a really late night so it evens itself out. I decided to sort my video game collection, trying to organize it, I managed to finish sorting my PlayStation 2 games, and that took some time. Although I look at this shelf unit and I realize I need to get one that lets me see all the games, that way it makes it easier to find. You never know when I'll get the craving to play some NHL 2k4 or some Person 3 FES. The crazy thing was though, sorting through my games I realized that there are still some games for the PS2 that I still need to get for my collection, off the top of my head a game I really felt like playing the other day was the first Kingdom Hearts. I had a lot of fun with that game and say what you will, but I really enjoyed it. That and I guess I still need the World Heroes Collection, although I doubt I'd play that much. I didn't get to sorting my GameCube, Xbox, Wii and Xbox 360 games, but that will be for another day. This also reminds me I need to get around to getting a PS3 and a HD tv, I mean it's about time I would say.

As I am writing this I am looking through some covers and remixes of different songs, and apparently a big thing is rock covers of pop songs. It's strange at first but like any catchy pop song, it eventually grows on you. I really enjoyed a cover to Bad Romance and Last Friday Night, but it's definitely not for everyone, it's very bizarre combination. But please suggest to me good remix channels if you got any or sites for that matter, I love all shapes and forms of music, so lay it out on me.

Also today I got to work on a few more sketch cards, but I will posting these on the Spent Pencils Facebook page and on the IDR blog, so be sure to follow those and check them out. But remember to leave me any request for a character and I will do my best to do it up. But Yeah, it's time to scan these up, so I will see over on the next page. Also I gotta work tomorrow early so I best get myself a little of sleep...well maybe a few hours.

Riders Awaken!

Call it what you will, a long day at work, lack of food or vitamins, lack of sleep, or what I think it may be a deadly combination of all three. I am totally broken, my whole body is killing me, my legs feel like they walked miles and miles on end, and my spine is really sore. Now I think I understand Danny Glover just a little bit more in the Lethal Weapon movies. But I can't even say that I am still really young, okay, energy! Rise! Up and atom!

Sketch Card It Up!

Greetings geeks and freaks from all corners of the internet, today is another late post, so as you can imagine I've had a very long day at the work place, sort of busy today with all the little kids being on holiday vacation from school. But that's not a big deal and it's not going to stop me from posting for you, and thank you in advanced to everyone who takes a small time from their day to read my little blogs, it's a joy writing them and will do my best to post one everyday, so tell your friends and family, spread the word on Slackers Code.



So today, we got ourselves a new little thing here that a few of my friends have started to do and that's sketch cards. What's a sketch card you ask? It's like getting a regular commission print or drawing but on a micro sized paper, but it makes it easier to collect and trade with friends. I have a few sites from fellow artist friends that are doing some cards as well, that I will be linking at the end here, two are my good friends and mentors in the art game, Maddsketch and Joe Osei Bonsu. I love these guys, super super talented, if I can be half the artist that they are, that would be more than enough. So if you've noticed that I've improved, it's all thanks to the teaching and guidance from these guys and all the amazing artist from Spent Pencils. Drink the pepsi, be the pepsi.  Anyways, it's great to see all the cool and different ideas that artist incorporate to these cards, and so today I will share a few of mine with you today.

Captain Marvel (Redesign):

So this was an idea given while the SP crew was hanging out, the idea was to redesign different characters of the Justice League. I decided to pick Captain Marvel, in part cause technically he is the kid of the group and at times, I feel like the kid in the group. The idea here was to make him looking more like a tough and rough punk, the bolt scarred right on his chest to make him look more intimidating towards enemies and thugs.

The Joker:

If you've been reading the current Batman comics, here's a face you won't soon forget. After the events in Detective Comics #1, the Joker is truly fucking wild now! I love this morbid and sick twisted idea on the Joker, it's perhaps the best move done by the new 52 DC universe!

Iron Patriot:

Hey kids, it's the Green Goblin! Sort of, or maybe just another face for Norman Osborn. The run on Dark Avengers was amazing, and this idea of the perfect hero shell holding the darkest mind of the Marvel universe was brilliant in my mind. Honestly I was hoping the Dark Reign would last longer.

Thor:

The God of thunder himself! I've grown to love Thor and his crazy adventures in the nine realms, he really has grown on me over the past few weeks. And yes, I am working on a few more from the Thor universe, including a Loki as well...and a Hiddleston Loki for the girls. :P
