It was a cold weekend in Ottawa but luckily it was a warm welcome at the Ottawa Pop Expo this past weekend. A big thank you first of all to everyone who came to the show and stopped by our +Spent Pencils table and everyone at the artist alley. We do the traveling, the drawing and all of it for you, so a big thank you again to all of you. The trip was a blast though, when you are in good company you can go anywhere really, and the drive up was a blast with a stops along the way and even belting out "Wrecking Ball" as we drove, it's a damn catchy tune. We got in to town in the afternoon and decided to crash, apparently artist don't get much sleep, apparently this a thing. But as we watched the World Cup line ups and ordered in some pizza, we got to sketch and work on our different projects. It was also a great opportunity to work with some new pencil necks Nicholas Lukic and Herbert Kwan, not to mention working with my big brothers Joe Osei Bonsu, Maddsketch and Vince Sunico. I think all of us had a hard time getting to sleep out of excitement, but we passed out one by one. After a quick breakfast we made our way down to the Ernst & Young Centre and got unpacked, ready to see what the days ahead had in store.
What I gathered from this weekend is everyone loves Loki. Even if he is a Lemongrab. I didn't think my print would do so well, but you guys love that Lemongrab Loki, and lots of love for my Pokemon and Adventure Time prints as well, so once again thank you guys! And I got a great response from the X-Men and Adventure Time cover I did, so you can bet you will be seeing a print coming very soon. And be sure to drop me any and all suggestions here or on my Tumblr, Twitter or even on Instagram. I want to do more with all of you here, a back and forth if you will. After all you can't have a storm without any clouds.
But this weekend was a blast as you can tell from the pictures here, I got a chance to get to meet a lot of new faces, work on a few commissions as well and got to pick up a few gifts for friends as well. And every show and every convention gives me more and more experience and I love doing this with my Spent family. So a big thanks for all the support and love this year, 2013 has been a blast! I got to get going but again, keep posted here for all updates, I will see you soon. Keep chasing the storm.
Well that means it's crunch time for all of us comic book artist and writers, less sleep and more Monster energy drinks. Tonight will be my first night to be able to sit down and get working on some of my projects, I got a lot to finish but I think I should be alright if I stick to the plan and power through and make some awesome art work. I didn't feel great this morning, had to call in sick after throwing up bile all morning, I am pretty sure it was something I ate the night before. Although I am finding now in days my body is becoming more and more sensitive towards the things I eat, so I really need to be more careful about what I eat now in days. But I am feeling a little better, hopefully I can put in a few hours and bust out some good work. I am meeting up with the crew tomorrow for some work and of course filming the latest episode of Time Well Spent, it will be episode 9! I also want to do some promotional work for TWS, maybe some postcards and/or stickers for the Spent Pencils table at Fan Expo. Trying to get the word out on the show and get more viewer interaction, which would be amazing. We love doing the show, and I would love to share that with as many fans as possible, so spread the word and tell the world. Also if you have yet to see it, here is episode 8 in case you didn't get a chance to see it yet...
A very funny episode to shoot, it was hard to keep a straight face with all the shenanigans going on in the background. As for the Spotlight comics on this issue me and Tiffany take a look at two different one shot issues, Tiff takes a look at Marvel comics Wolverine: In The Flesh, a book which has Wolverine working with a celebrity chef to track down a cannibal killer. I take a look at Kaboom comics Adventure Time: 2013 Summer Special, a collection of mini adventures with the crazy casts of AT, a must for all fans. Then for Reviews we look at a local talent in Yuki vs Panda, an awesome martial arts comedy about one girls rivalry with a panda, I can't even make that up, it's awesome though with a colorful casts of characters and both fighters training for the ultimate showdown. A great ready and very fun read, highly suggest to check it out when you get a chance. And remember, if you know any great books that you think we should be reading, by all means let us know. What time is it? Well it's certainly is Adventure Time! But today's AT
book is not exactly following the adventures of our well known loveable
heroes, Finn the human and Jake the dog. This time around we are
following the adventures of the Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun, as
they are tasked by Princess Bubblegum to find Finn and Jake after they
seemed to have gone missing. And with two of the funniest character in
the candy kingdom teaming up to solve the case, what could possibly go
wrong? Well there's a good chance that absolutely everything, but when
it comes to Adventure Time that usually means a lot of fun and hilarity
as well.
Adventure Time: Candy Capers is the brand new release from Kaboom!
comics and was released last week. The team behind this story is the
dynamic duo of Ananth Panagariya & Yuko Ota, from the Johnny Wander
webcomic fame. The writing is hilarious and still stays to the well
known AT kind of beat, with a lot of quotable lines from, "Let's destroy
problems" and "I sweat when I'm nervous". It's a joy to read and see
how the story will play along. It goes without saying to any fans of
Johnny Wander, get this book. You won't be disappointed, it leaves you
with a big smile with every page, a great read. The art is handled by
Ian McGinty, who keeps the look as we know the series and adds to it,
making unique panels and capturing a lot of silly faces. Needless to say
the art and writing go hand in hand and make for a very great time, I
wish they would make this into an episode on the series. It's that good in my opnion, I honestly can't wait to see what is going to happen next. I guess if I had to make any kind of complaint, it seems a bit of a stretch but this is going to be a limited series and so it will be only six issues. But I have that complaint a lot with really good limited series, I always want more and more of these great runs. However, if the series gets a good reception, we could see more work from this team on other Adventure Time books in the future. Fingers crossed here. I am curious to see how the story will play out, but I doubt it will be a let down. But I will say this, don't dismiss Adventure Time or this books as something directly geared to younger audiences, it's a very smart, witty and silly series for everyone to enjoy. So for sure get this book today, it's a great sweet little break from grim and gritty in your comic book reading.
