The Torment Legacy

You know what book I had not read in ages, for like the longest time, Todd McFarlane's Spider-man. And don't sit there like you don't know what book I am talking about, this is without a shadow of a doubt one the most famous comic books of all time. Is that an exaggeration? Not really, the success of this book, along with Liefeld (X-Force) and Lee (X-Men), they were able to change the comic book industry as we know it today. If you haven't seen the Image Comics documentary, it is an absolute must watch, even if you aren't that into comics, go and watch as soon as you can. That being said, I found this book in my collection and decided to give it a read again, see what it was all about. I remember hearing a lot of negative comments about this story, Torment, a story with Spider-man taking on The Lizard in a very gritty fashion. But I wonder, why can't Spider-man be gritty? I mean his enemies want to kill him, not slap him on the wrist. His first love was killed by a psychopath in a goblin suit, he then sold his marriage to the devil. How is Spider-man free from the gritty? While I see that tons and tons of kids love him and that's great, but kids also love Batman. And Batman is the undisputed king of grit. While I don't suggest every superhero go down the path of the Dark Knight, I do want to say that if you can do it right, all power to you. Spider-man Reign gets slammed so much by critics and fans, but I thought it was an incredible story with some of the greatest Spidey moments I have ever seen. If busting out of a coffin in the classic red and blue tights doesn't get your comic book blood pumping, nothing will. And so, if this is going to be a dark trip into the world of the friendly neighbourhood Spider-man, well so be it. And with that, let's take a look at Todd McFarlane's classic, from Marvel comics Spider-man issue 1. 

Can we at least all agree this is the best looking Spider-man cover of all time though? It is absolutely iconic and eye popping, all those webs and spiders crawling all about and the hero right there in the middle of it all, looking better then ever. And yes back in the 90's there was a crazy trend that everything was going to be a collectors item in time and yes this cover had a couple of different styles, like the gold one or the black and white one. But still, this image is so incredible you can't be mad. How many fans have created fan art based on this cover? This has got to be a requested commission recreation on sketch covers at conventions for sure. Not to mention the amount of times the pose has been used for other books, it was even used later on a Spawn cover as well. But yeah, I love it. When I think Spider-man, I think of this cover.

Okay, so the actual book and all.  

Well while I admit it isn't the deepest piece of literature I have read, after going through it, I don't think it needs to be. Now keep in mind, McFarlane wrote and drew this book. But clearly he is an artist first, writer second. But he does have some good ideas and does a different take on this classic hero, this is a Todd McFarlane Spider-man for sure. And of all the villains he could have picked, he made a really interesting one with The Lizard. For the longest time, Lizard would crawl about and attack people but not really do too much damage, and you felt sympathetic for this character. After all, Doctor Connors isn't able to control his alter ego. But here we get a violent, hungry and gory Lizard, and it's pretty cool. So the while the writing does leave more to be desired, the ideas are really good and thanks to the art, ideas may be enough. The art in this book looks absolutely stunning, this was done well over 20 years ago and still looks as good as anything being done today. Say what you will about the man, you can't deny the absolute talent he has. The details in the webs, the way Spider-man moves through the city sky, even the look of all the people in New York, everything is brought to life in a way only a comic book can do. I highly urge to look through this book and tell me what you think, take in all the lines and all the action going on in each panel and tell me you don't see how an artist was able to change the comic book world. Spider-man will always be a cornerstone to the legacy of McFarlane and comic books as a whole. 

Is this book getting a pass to gold on it's art alone? Yeah I would say so. But also on how it change the game forever. You have to remember, Marvel doesn't just let anyone work on a Spider-man book, let alone write and draw one, unheard of. So this will probably be something we may never see again. But look, this is just what I think, it goes without saying that you can only take it for what it is, nothing is absolute. So what do you think about this issue? The Great Scott Avengers...

Okay that was a really bad title, but I swear it does relate to what goes down in this comic that I am looking at today. It was either that or "That Time Iron Man was Turned into a Naked Killer Robot Lady". You know we all have that one that got away, an idea that at the time might have been awesome, especially if everyone was passing around some green and/or booze was involved, but once done and finished is actually a pretty terrible idea. Kevin Smith did it with Tusk, and I have to say Brain Michael Bendis would probably want to take this one back. Or not, he makes millions, so f*ck you. I have to believe anyone who makes boat loads of money today can look back and not really care about past mistakes or flops along the way. But if I am wrong, that would totally be cool. (After all, Mark Wahlberg knows The Happening was awful) Regardless, I can't help but feel like this arc in The Mighty Avengers is one that most comic book fans want to bury and forget about for sometime. And here I come like a grave digging jerk face to bring it back into the light and talk about it. A book with a new team of heroes after a massive world event like Civil War against a classic Avengers foe like Ultron, how can you mess that up? And is it really that bad? Even a strange plot can have some great moments and is worth another look. So with that said, let's take a look at The Mighty Avengers issue 2 from Marvel comics.  

From the creative team of Brain Michael Bendis and artist Frank Cho, we get a new team of Avengers. Though some may call them the "sell-outs" Avengers team, this is the team that sided with Iron Man during Civil War, the other team of cool kid "rebels" Avengers became the New Avengers. This is still a very strong powerhouse team, led by Ms.Marvel, with Iron Man, Wasp, Black Widow, Wonder Man, Sentry and Ares. You would think this team could handle practically anything, and then Iron Man gets turned into a naked robot chick who looks exactly like Wasp...because creepy. Yeah, that goes down in issue 1 and issue 2 picks up right there, Mole Man and his critters are also there but they run away pretty quickly as soon as the shit hits the fan. We see a bunch of flashbacks to the recruitment of most of the team members, except Ares, who actually is probably the most curious one of them all, being a God and all that. And the team is trying deal with the now naked lady Iron Man villain that they are trying to take down and figure out what the waffle is going on. Though Janet has an idea about what they might be dealing with, it becomes clear by the end of the book. But we get to see plenty of Avengers tossing about and being thrown all over the place, good times. 

So let me make one thing clear here, Bendis and Cho are very talented individuals, that really goes without saying. And who could say otherwise, unless your Joe Quesada or Jim Lee, you don't really have a platform to dump on anyone making money in the industry. Anyone who makes it, is there for a reason. That being said, do I feel like this book and this particular arc is pretty weak all things considered. While some really interesting stories were going on in New Avengers, which Bendis was handling at the time and planting seeds for Secret Invasion, this feels like it needs to be strange for the sake of being strange. Can you just have Ultron come back and wreck some havoc, just like that. Sure, why not? I know you always need to up the ante, but this just comes as a little forced. Shock for the sake of shock, no substance. And comics do this all the time to stir the pot, I get that. But after the shock is gone all that is left are feelings of embarrassment and sadness. These are the books that become ghost stories of stupidity, like no one would actually do that in a comic...would they? Yeah, they would. Could this same story have been done properly? I think so. This Ultron here feels like a killer sex alien. Instead you could've had the bad robotic villain waking up as Janet and believing that it is Janet, not Ultron. A sleeper agent, a wolf in sheep's clothing. You work an angle of mistrust and confusion in the team, and have them conquer Ultron and grow as a team overall, especially if this is the first challenge for The Mighty Avengers. Just an idea, but you get the point. 

This is one of those if you happen to find it at a good price, check it out, but you know be warned. But if you are a pretty new to comics, you'll probably want to read something that isn't so bizarre. This is the comic book your librarian warned you about. 

And just like that, another book reviewed and gone. Feels good to be writing again, had to get that out of my system. There is actually a lot I want to talk about recently, been going to therapy and been looking around for a new job, all the while doing my best to bust out as much art work as possible while trying to learn more and more art techniques. Not to mention the constant feeling that life and most people are leaving you behind, not a great feeling. But you know what, I am here now and I am going to do my best to bust out as much work as I can. It's the only thing I can do, so let's shoot the shit and talk some comics. Obligatory Ultron Blog

...what? You didn't see that coming? 

So yeah, I stayed up late and I had to walk home, but it was worth it. To me it wasn't a question of when I was going to see Avengers: Age of Ultron, it was more how and where. This watching was more for the sake of watching the film and being able to avoid spoilers and anything else that might ruin the moment and I am so glad to say the moment was incredible. But for everything I want to gush and gush about Age of Ultron I want to get some of the bad points out of the way. The film wasn't without flaws, but nothing that stopped from being absolute blast of a good time. And I will make this spoiler free, I think maybe by the end of the month people can spoiler talk about things if they want. This is the grace period.

Off the bat, if you don't know comics or haven't been watching all the Marvel movie, you will be lost watching this. What AOU does is ambitious and big, but if you don't know why you should care or even understand who is who, then you are going to have a good time. Or at the very least you will be confused. Secondly and this is strictly my opinion, for a movie with his name in the title, I wasn't entirely sold on Ultron. But that's me and I am going to explain just yet, I want you to go see it and see for yourself first, without reading anything on the character. And also it needs to be said, I know why they are there, but did there have to be so many in movie advertisements? I can feel movie critics collectivity scoff at this. Like I know why they are here, I just don't care much for them. 

So the good now. Comic book fans will absolutely love this movie, so many great scenes with all the different characters and probably some of the best action moments on screen out of all the Marvel movie so far or comic books movies in general. Mind blowing action all over the place, you will love it. And the twins, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, just awesome. I loved every moment we got to see these two in action, I wish we could have seen more of them but I guess I will have to wait for those deleted scenes on the Blu-Ray. And the Avengers were great as well, loved the back and forth between the characters, seeing the trinity of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor all interacting as the main corner stones of the team was great as well. And the movie leaves you wanting to see what is going to happen next, so Ant Man, you better have a whole lot of awesome. 

So at the end of the day, comic book fans go see this immediately! And let me know what you guys thought of the film, did you guys have a good time? Loved it? Hated it? Fogs and Silent Matt...

So the last two books that I will be looking at this week are the ones I feel are more of a personal connection too. In the history of Daredevil I don't know if everyone feels the same way about these stories, but regardless I really like both of these and I feel like they are worth a look at. So let's just get it out of the way. And we kick things off with the Guardian Devil story from Kevin Smith, of Jay and Silent Bob fame and quite a few other comics under his belt and comic book men and plenty of other projects. Say what you will about Kevin Smith, he is the same guy who made the cult classics Clerks and Mall Rats (going to say right now, a big fan of Mall Rats) but at the same time he is the guy who made Tusk. So not everything he does is gold but I have to give him credit, he works a lot and moves around, he has left his mark on the movie industry and in the comic book world. And he is a big hockey fan, and any geek who is a fan of hockey gets a lot of brownie points in my books. So love him or not, look at every piece of work individually and see for yourself. I remember when I first read these issues I didn't even connect the dots until a few years later, and I was totally blown away by this story which worked as a relaunch for the new age of Daredevil. And having one of the biggest names in the industry, Joe Quesada drawing this story, I couldn't believe it. Even today, it is one of the best looking books out there. Hell even look at Spider-man: One More Day, possibly one of the worst written stories but damn does it look incredible. And that being said, let's take a look into Guardian Devil.

This is a pretty wild ride of a story, with plenty of characters coming in and out of every issue, a big character loss and plot twist to the finally showdown. I don't want to spoil this in case you haven't read it, but these elements will probably make or break the story for you as a whole. I am looking back now, I want to believe these things happened for a reason. That regardless of the writer or the story the end was coming to said character one way or another, as sad as that might be. It is a bold move to take for sure, but after all that was done, it was handled properly. It sucks to see this happen, but damn did it remind Matt about the risks and losses one can face as a masked hero. The growth of the character from this event is something that the series builds on with each issue.

Also I know not all collections contain both of these stories but mine does, so just had to say as well that the next story arc with the introduction of Echo from David Mack and Joe Quesada is a really good and an extremely creative layout as well. Not to mention we get to see some background on Wilson Fisk, The Kingpin. The similarities between Echo and Kingpin to Daredevil is interesting as we see through the past of both these characters, and we seeing a grieving hero doing his best to keep his head up and get back to living his life as he should. An interesting note, the first Daredevil movie actually borrowed a lot from both these big stories, with scenes like the playground fight or even the cover of issue 3, that image was used at the opening of that movie. And if we are being honest here, the extended edition was okay if anything. Nothing compared to what we have now, and I think in large part to being able to deal with heavier issues and more mature themes. 

So while these arcs made some big bold moves and I know a few may or may not agree with, I still enjoyed both of these arcs a lot. The incredible art definitely helps push the story to the limits and will glue your eyes to the pages for some hours. It's always a treat when Quesada goes to work on any Marvel book. Worth a look at least, then judge how you feel afterwards. You know I love to hear back from you, even if you hated it or didn't like it at all. Fearless From the Start...

I remember when we got the first trailers of Daredevil, I knew without a shadow of a doubt that the series was going to take ideas from one of my favourite Daredevil stories of all time. And that story is of course, Daredevil: The Man Without Fear by Frank Miller and John Romita Jr. An origin story that fits like a glove with all the stories penned by Miller in the past before he released this, and it makes sense as well to have him write it. For years he had reshaped Matt Murdock into the gritty tough hero we all know and love today. And drawn by the legendary John Romita Jr, drawing a character who was drawn by his father for years as well. An absolute full circle here. For really big fans of the series, I would say this is the most important of all the books to check out, mainly for how much influence it takes on the show. But it also happens to be one of the best origin stories ever told for any superhero ever, learning responsibility and what to do with his abilities, highly suggest this book to everyone.

Originally released in the early 90's, the book collects all five issues of this mini series. We follow the Daredevil story all the way from the beginning as a trouble maker kid in Hells Kitchen, growing up with his boxer dad and the accident that robbed him of his sight. We see him learning how to fight and how to move in the darkness by his mentor, Stick. It follows Matt through college, his first meeting with Elektra, Foggy Nelson and a clash against the operations of the Kingpin. And you get a great build up to the climactic showdown in the last issue, you see a young and reckless Murdock who makes mistakes and ends up hurting himself and others. I remember reading when I was just starting up my Daredevil collection, I will never forget the image of Matt standing in the rain over the apartments of two parents hopelessly trying to figure out how to save their child. "There's nobody who can help us" they say as Matt listens and knows what needs to be done. That was a Daredevil moment if any, I still to this day love that image. It says everything you need to know about him in one page.

Perfect.

Another important note, the black home made costume he has in the series, came right out of this book. You get to see it in issue 4 and 5 in action against the bad guys, and it works really well for the series as well. Especially since he is mainly dealing with thugs and goons at the moment, he just needs to kick some ass and save people. Although kudos to the Netflix series on updating the look and making it look really good, I almost forget sometimes that he should be rocking the crimson red and horns. I am interested to see if they use the Elektra origin story that was told here in the second season, hopefully, because she is a kick ass character who could even run her own show. And after the success with Daredevil who isn't looking forward to seeing Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Personally I would love to see Moon Knight, Thunderbolts and maybe if they can get him back, Ghost Rider.

I can't recommend this book enough to all newcomers to the Daredevil universe, this is perhaps the most noted origin story when talking about Daredevil now in days. There are others like Season One: Daredevil or Daredevil: Yellow as well serves as telling of his early days in the crime fighting business. But what do you think? Died Once...

Okay, let's get dark.

So think of the worst day you have ever had, maybe even worst week or month. It sucked and maybe it was your darkest moment, your rock bottom. Welcome to hell on Earth for Matt Murdock in the classic Born Again run in Daredevil by at the time one of the biggest name in comics, Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli. The influence and shape that Miller brought to Daredevil is uncanny, and after watching the series you can see all the different pieces he has brought to Hells Kitchen and the Daredevil universe. Arguably his best work ever, what we have here is the most painful moments for Matt Murdock, the lowest of the lows. A hero is not defined by his moments in the sun, but how he escapes the darkest moments that would break most of us. What do you do when you lose everything? Can you start over?

The Born Again collection contains issues 226-233 of Daredevil, released during one of the best times for comic books, in the mid 80's. To me, I was told to read this series by several different comic book shop owners and old school fans, remember my comic days started in the mid 90's...which was a pretty bad time to start apparently. I remember when I first read this book, I was blown away. Because living in poverty, growing up in a bad neighbourhood and dealing with addictions is a reality a lot of us have had to face, and if you haven't, honestly count your blessings. Seeing Daredevil dealing with all these elements was eye opening. Generally all our favourite heroes are well of as millionaires or have a pretty decent job, here we see Murdock living in shelters and churches. We see his old flame, Karen Page, dragged down by her own addictions. And we see the Kingpin taking in all of this misery and enjoying it. It's an incredible story of redemption and perseverance, one that I could relate with growing up and a story I feel I need to read, to understand why Daredevil is more then another guy in tights with super powers.

I feel like what Born Again was able to accomplish was something that all comic book fans should read and quite possibly one of the best works ever created. A study of real struggles, understanding the idea of redemption and of forgiveness, the ability to start again. It's honestly sad Frank Miller has fallen off over the years, because after the work he did here with Daredevil and even over on Batman, he could have called it a day and never looked back. Regardless this book still stands the test of time and is an absolute classic for every fans collection. Obviously it goes without saying, I wouldn't suggest this book to younger readers, but one that eventually everyone should read once. A story that captures a lot of the essence of pain and misery, perfectly matched with the art of Mazzucchelli. If you want a comic that will make you think and you can talk about for years to come, look no further.

So no matter how dark it gets, just remember to always fight back and never give up on yourself and those who love you. But what do you think about Daredevil Born Again? A masterpiece? Over rated? Back in the Day...

Welcome to Daredevil week everybody, so to get things going just a basic idea of what to expect this week. I am going to be looking at a couple of the classic Daredevil books that I have read and that I feel that you should take a look at. I didn't want to compare which story is the best or worst, but more which I feel should be looked at and I will be the first to admit I am missing out on a lot of stories, choosing which ones to look at has been a tough decision to be honest. But I think let make a rule of thumb here, if it says Daredevil, pick it up and see for yourself. Hell I can tell you straight up the worst comic Daredevil has been a part of was the Superior Iron Man, the series had no idea what to do with Matt Murdock and basically had get slapped around by an "evil" Iron Man and be the voice of reason, who then gets his memory wiped. No growth, no cross over, no point. I found it insulting to be honest, something that could have been done right in one issue was instead a drag out insult in four issues. Daredevil has gone up against The Hulk, Luke Cage, Psylocke and tons of other characters in past, and yeah, these characters did outmatch him but never did he go down without a fight. I guess it is hard to try and write an anti-hero Iron Man, all the while trying to do justice for Daredevil. That series had a pretty brutal start.

So for my first recommendations for everything Daredevil is the original first run of the series, and I am talking original back in the day of 10 cent comics original. That's right, we are going to kick it old school today. And luckily we don't have to break bank or anything like that, Marvel comics has released collections of pretty much all their series, in the "Essential" collections you can find all the original work of all your favourite heroes like the Fantastic Four, Spider-man and the X-Men. And luckily for me, they made two collecting the beginnings of Daredevil.

As far as comic books goes, this is history. You get to read the original works of legendary industry icon, Stan Lee. In the first volume of Essential Daredevil you get 25 issue all written by Stan Lee. I have to do my research but I know he was writing more then one series back in these days, so that dedication to all his characters is absolutely incredible. He is the father of Marvel for various reasons, though creating mainly super heroes, his work is still something to admire and he has been an inspiration for many comic book creators. The list of legendary artist on this book is also something to take in, just to name a few; Steve Ditko, Bill Everett, Joe Orlando, Wallace Wood, John Romita and a surprise to me, Jack Kirby even worked on a layout in two of the issues. These are the godfathers of art in comics, so take it all in and enjoy the trip.

That said, something to keep in mind, that Daredevil here is way more light hearted then any incarnation of the character. So just in case you came looking for some gritty dark action and justice, that takes place some years later in the characters timeline. But here you still get to meet a lot of the supporting cast and classic villains that still remain a big part of the Daredevil universe today. We get to see his first fights with Electro, The Owl, Gladiator and Stilt Man. Even guest appearances from other characters like Spider-man, Doctor Doom and Namor. You get to see the yellow suit in action until he goes to the red suit we know and love. Though to be honest, I don't mind the yellow suit that much, it kind of works in it's own strange way. But then again I loved the armoured suit from the 90's, so what do I know. But with 25 issues in here, this book gives you plenty to read, perfect for long trips on the road or in the sky. So I highly recommend this classic collection to all new comers to Daredevil, know the past to understand the future.

Avenge Them to Hell...

A hockey fan first, I am rooting for the Flames over the Canucks.

I was trying to think of some of the many ways we can all gush and talk about the awesome that is Daredevil, not just the incredible series that is now on Netflix, but the character that has taken part of many comics. I was thinking of different ideas for a potential blog, like maybe a top 10 list of sorts, but to be honest I am not sure if I am able to do that yet, with some many Daredevil books out there, I can't pick which are the best or the most important, it's something I really got to think about. So what I will be doing is suggesting different books, and these I feel for me are some of my favourite reads of this series and character. But that's going to be later in the week, today I wanted to talk about in my opinion the best issue of a series that Daredevil joins in on, and this has been rare for him in all his years, so it's a pretty special moment to me. A few years ago there was a pretty big Marvel event, Fear Itself, which had Nazi robot armies and Asgardian serpents making a mess of things. And it was during this event, in issue 16 of New Avengers when things go from pretty cool to the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was thinking about it and I've got to say, this issue alone was probably the best issue of Daredevil that isn't a Daredevil book. He has had run in over the years with Spider-man, Punisher, Ghost Rider and many other characters and series, but everything about this issue helps to remind everyone how incredible the man without fear really is.

So it needs to be said this has got to be one of my favourite works from Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato Jr, two guys who have been doing a lot of work in comic books for some years now. But this issue, I couldn't even believe it, seeing Daredevil on the cover of a New Avengers book. The issue itself has a clever if not a bit gimmicky set up, with all the team mates doing a behind the scenes like commentary on the events of Fear Itself and also on the whole team, on who deserves to be an Avenger. I like the idea set up, especially since over the years there have been quite a few different Avengers team, and I feel like they are all worthy of being Avengers. So seeing a generally strictly solo heroes get thrown into the mix, it's interesting seeing how valuable Daredevil becomes to the team. You also get a pretty good lesson in why Daredevil is a one guy you just don't mess, no matter how many giant Nazi robots you bring to a fight. Page by page, panel by panel, so many incredible shots of Daredevil being incredible, some of my absolute favourite pages of all time here in this issue. Especially one shot of him just walking into Avengers Mansion, shadows used to create one the most fearsome looking Daredevil images ever. Absolutely stunning work here by Deodato Jr. 

I don't want to give out to many details on this one, mainly because the experience of reading it for any Daredevil fan, old or new, will be an awesome one with each page. So yeah, look for this book at your local comic book shop or at the next convention, and if you can't wait this issue is available on  the Marvel App, so you can download it right away and get to reading it. It's worth the price. 

But more importantly I am going to go look through all my Daredevil books and issues and see which are the best recommendations of the bunch. But as a general idea, if you like what you saw on Netflix this past weekend, then get yourself some Daredevil comics, the current run by Mark Waid and Chris Samnee is really good and a personal favourite of all the series that I am currently following. Just know that Daredevil is working out in San Fransico right now, but the series remains true to the man without fear. And just in case, be sure to read my past blog post here. Devil Gets His Dues...

Whenever I am asked, who is your favourite superhero? Without hesitation, I always answer, Daredevil. Ever since I was just a kid watching cartoons and collecting random comics from dollar bins, Daredevil was always my absolute favourite hero. It didn't matter if he was an Avenger (though he did get to join the New Avengers, which was awesome) or if he was able to punch a hole in the moon, Daredevil never needed to be the biggest or strongest character in the entire galaxy of existence. Behind the mask, you have a man who is constantly challenged by enemies and his own inner demons, but he never stays down, he will always keep fighting. The greatest appeal to Daredevil is that despite his weakness, challenges and heartbreak, he never stops fighting for the right cause. And he is one of those characters who does interact with people, as a lawyer and as Daredevil, he generally wants to help good people who have fallen on some bad times. I wanted to write a little tribute piece to my favourite hero, to share with you and perhaps many new Daredevil fans (thanks to the awesome new show) why he is the best out there, no gimmicks just the courage to be the man without fear. 

Before moving out to San Fransico, the main home of the devil was Hells Kitchen, a lower end section of New York City.  The city itself helps Daredevil become more relatable to a common kid like me who was growing up in Toronto. Even to this day I am always looking up at tall buildings and offices, hoping to maybe catch the glimpse of a crimson warrior jump rooftop to rooftop. As a kid Matt Murdock was a bit of a troublemaker, the kid who would do the things others wouldn't even think about trying. And as son of local boxing hero, Battlin Jack Murdock, he had a reputation to up hold. But as times got tough, Jack sat Matt down and made him promise to a life of studies and opportunities, to never raise his fists and become a better man then he ever was. So while he couldn't fight back to bullies, they would mock him by calling him "Daredevil". And one of the greatest things you can ever do in life is take an insult and wear it, that being a "faggot" makes you a better person then anyone who tries to shame you could imagine. We should always be proud of who we are, no one has the right to bring you down or deny you, that is simply their own fears and weaknesses lashing out. So having Matt take the name that was supposed to mock him and turn it into the name that brought a Kingpin of crime to his knees, well that is something to admire for sure. The rest as they say is history, the accident that robbed him of his vision but heightened all of his other senses, giving him a radar like power to sense all around him and even anticipate attacks. And after his father is murdered for not throwing down a match, Matt uses his skills and fights back. The story does change from here, with a lot of different origin stories told over the years in my opinion the best one is probably Man Without Fear by Frank Miller (before he went off the rails) and John Romita Jr. Absolutely excellent book, and one that may influence the show quite a bit. The black track suit costume is taken right from this story, and I am guessing other elements as well will be used for sure. 

For years I have been growing up with Daredevil. When I was entering high school, Kevin Smith penned the Guardian Devil story. When I was in grade 11 or so, Daredevil decides to become the Kingpin in Hells Kitchen. I was working at the Hockey Hall of Fame when Daredevil turned his city into Shadowland and took over the Hand. Regardless what big event is taking place, I can always count on Daredevil. With as many stories as creative teams, I've never had a writer or an artist I didn't like, if anything through Daredevil I found other incredible work. Ed Brubaker is one the best story tellers out there, from noir thrillers to espionage, he is simply one of the best. And Chris Samnee, who took the devil to San Fransico and really brought the pages to life with excellent panels page by page, creating a look that fits like a glove. I am not sure what a life without Daredevil is like, but I don't want to find out. And most recently I have been able to connect with him on another personal level, in one of my favourite issues ever, we see Matt coming to terms with his own depression. Being able to block it out for months and months, he finally has to deal with his own mental health. Which like me, I have had to come to terms with what I am feeling, the weakness and the absolute darkness that is rooted to it all, being surrounded but feeling so alone and isolated. Seeing that Daredevil is also trying to understand himself and let others in was a heart touching moment for me, this was something that really spoke volumes to me and I couldn't be a happier DD fan. A massive thank you to Mark Waid and Chris Samnee, for a issue that will forever be dear to me. And in general a thank you to all the past creators who have helped shaped Matt Murdock with every issue into the greatest hero ever created. 

So yeah, this got emotional. It was going to, because for me, Daredevil isn't just some fictional character. To me, he is someone to look up, someone who reminds you to be better despite your weaknesses and the fear that others carry. Be fearless in life. Does Whatever a Gwen Does..

There is little to no reason why you shouldn't be reading Spider-Gwen. It is really everything and more that you have been hearing, this is going to be one of the biggest series of the year, and it is only getting started. During the massive Spider-verse event which saw Spider-men and women from various different universes coming together to fight a threat that could have seen an end to every Spider hero in existence. One of these heroes, a Spider-Women whose true identity was Gwen Stacy, who of course in the known 616 universe had been tragically killed. In her world, the spider gave her the powers and it was Peter Parker who was killed. But as you go into the Spider-Gwen world, you will find a lot of familiar faces taking over some new roles. The brand new twist is quite possibly the best part of our new heroine, because similar powers don't mean same responsibilities.  

Forget everything you think you know about Gwen Stacy, because this a whole new and kick ass Stacy. She is able to beat up and make fun of her opponent just like any good Spider-man, she is also a drummer in her own underground rock band (in New York which is kind of a big deal), but still the daughter of the chief NYPD detective, George Stacy. So while trying to manage and dodge around her own social life, she has to deal with dangers like the Kingpin and Matt Murdock (that's right my boy DD is a villain in this world, like Shadowland all over again). Did I mention the Vulture? He is first up to make sure Spider Gwen stays down as a one hit wonder, surprisingly or perhaps not, the Vulture is just like the old cranky bird we know in this world. Though Gwen puts up a good fight, we end the fight on a cliffhanger...or a falling from the sky at high speeds hanger. 

But to sum things up as far as the book goes, it keeps the same tone and high energy that we got from Edge of Spider-verse issue 2, from the same creative team of writer, Jason Latour and artist, Robbi Rodriguez  we get back into this world and are ready to expand and grow, which is a really fresh approach to old concepts and ideas. This is a world you want to see more of, and with each issue that comes out, I can't wait to see the different changes all our favourite Marvel characters have taken. I can't stress this out enough, this is a book everyone should be reading. For long time comic book fans, you get a new look at the classics and the familiar and for new readers, it is a great book to add to your growing collections. Anyone who is too pig headed to pick this book up for whatever silly reason or insecurity you have, well you probably don't enjoy much in general. Seriously though get the steel rod out your butt and enjoy all comics out there. 

But like any book it isn't without a few flaws and hiccups, even a perfect book you want to find something wrong if only to be fair. I guess off the bat, I would suggest getting the Edge of Spider-verse issues, gives you more meat on the world building plate, but you can survive the story without it. Another thing is though, I am curious on how much time Marvel is going to give this series, because with Secret Wars coming up, the aftermath is anyone's guess. And to be honest half the fun of this series is seeing this alternative universe at play, so saving Spider-Gwen only to have her in 616, wouldn't be as much fun. Although, having her react to a guy like Daredevil here would be a fun misunderstanding fight for sure. Regardless I hope this book gets a long healthy life span, it would be sad to see it go after 12 issues, which has been the case for a quite a few series so far. Don't let the fans down Marvel. 

So should you be reading this book? Hells yes! It's funny, it's got action and a whole new world to explore. And now is the best time to get on board, the series is just three issues in, plenty of time to catch up on the story so far. But as always I am all ears to all opinions, comments and gushing, though I highly suggest we just gush and jump for joy over Spider-Gwen. Black as your Soul...

Who is ready for another massive Marvel crossover event? Not this guy! Seriously though it's true, after the shit show that was AXIS and knowing what is coming up this Spring with Secret Wars, in comes the Black Vortex, trying to squeeze in and make itself noticed. But I will be honest guys, I don't think that I am going to be following this one all the way through or at least properly, see the thing is here, this one plays out a lot like the big X-Men event a year or so back, Battle of the Atom, in which the chapters took places in different books. Say what you will, but I gotta say my piece, I don't like that format. That's me though, because I don't buy or follow every series, I find it a pain in the butt to pick up other books just to get a clue on what the hell is going on. And then at the end you have one issue of Wolverine and the X-Men in your collection, and it looks bare and strange. You then have to go out and find all the other issues or leave it there and pretend it doesn't bug you. Okay, I will admit that is a first world problem, but this a comic book blog page, small bends and second printings are kind of a big deal in our world. And you know what though, I did pick up Black Vortex Alpha, the first chapter to this story and I gotta say, it might have a story that really works. I have a big feeling I am going to be missing out on one good space adventure...

The first chapter here is by Sam Humphries and with art from Ed McGuinness, some big names in the comic book world and no, they are not off their rockers...not yet at least. And for fans of last years "Trial of the Phoenix" story that had the Guardians of the Galaxy team up with the All-New X-Men, this is right up your alley. We get both teams getting together to decide on the fate of a powerful ancient artifact that makes you awesome. What? No but seriously, this mirror shows you a reflection of a super powerful version of yourself, all you have to do is submit to it's power. For everything the Black Vortex will give you, there will be plenty that it takes away. A simple concept that used in this context with various different heroes from all over the galaxy, each one deciding on what to do with this thing. Because morally, sure you could destroy and that would be that. But say in the example of Beast, old and blue Hank McCoy, a man who has nip tucked the laws of space and times so much, you can't tell where the nose start and the mouth begins. Take him and give him the power or the knowledge to make things right, to put everything in it's right place. Why wouldn't he take that chance? And plenty other heroes who want to use this upgrade to do better and to be better. All you have to do is submit.

So like AXIS and Original Sin before it, the idea and concept here is really good and has got a ton of potential to create a great story with the big space cast. So if you are into Marvel space adventures, like GOTG and Fantastic Four, I highly suggest giving this one a look. The best way I would say to read this one is probably going to be in the collection, so hang tight for a few months til that comes out. And while this book and story have a lot going for it, we should get to some of the flaws and even potential flaws out of the way. Obviously it goes with out saying, this story has a chance of tripping and falling flat on its ass, think Shockmaster style. Also I know I will only be reading the X-Men side of this story, because those are the only series I am reading and I don't exactly feel like grabbing Star-Lord, GOTG and plenty of the other series. If you are able to look past this or are collecting all of these anyway, please let me know how it is and if it is worth finding these chapters. But also, I am curious as to why missing out on the action are the Uncanny X-Men, Cyclops and his team. Giving Cyclops the power to be a mutant messiah again, that has potential for a lot of chaos. Although young Cyclops will be reuniting with his team mates so that will be cool to see. And speak of the young out of time X-Men, I really hope the Vortex doesn't make another Phoenix. I don't about you, but I am okay with not reading another Phoenix story for maybe 10 years or more. I am all Phoenix-ed out.

Better Off Dead...

A face not even a mother could love...finds love. 

See, there is hope for everyone. If a crazy loud mouth killing mercenary can find love, so can you. Keep reaching for that rainbow. But the funny thing about love, sometimes it can go unwanted. So is the case for our favourite killer anti-hero, Deadpool in issue 43 of the 2008 run of the series. After Deadpool gets sent to the loony bin out in England, he manages to escape thanks to one of the doctors who works there and finds a deep attraction to him. Wait a minute, where else have I seen this? Crazy killer gets set free with a blonde doctor who is also kind of nuts, sounds familiar? I see what you did there Deadpool. That alone gives this issue and this story so many brownie points, or chimichanga points in this case. After all the Merc with a Mouth is known as much for his over the top violence as he is for his comedy, it is a careful and beautiful dance of both that is needed for a great Deadpool book. How does this one hold up? 

It takes a real kind of crazy to out crazy Deadpool, isn't that crazy? Well that is exactly the kind of psychopath we have on our hands with Dr.Ellen Whitby. Not because she is in love with Wade, although that is up for debate, but her love seems more like a really creepy obsession, creepy and dangerous. And when you start licking up a used can of beans, that is probably crossing the streets of creep town. So naturally Deadpool is now on the run from the police and federal agents and a stalker, all the while being stuck across sea in England. On the bright side, it can't possibly get any worse, can it? Well let's just say that his trip does end up getting a bit of royalty in there. And also we get a really dark and twisted reveal from the good old Dr.Whitby. 

The comedy in this book really holds up in this book, especially with Deadpool trying to get around in London, from car theft to clothes switch tricks, plenty of laughs in this book. Though not a lot of action, no slice and dice or bang bang bang or pineapple grenades here, which feels like something is missing. The book tends to be more of a comedy issue in that sense. Although the doctor here, she does come off really creepy, it is hard to feel sympathetic for such a character, especially considering her love is more of a sick obsession. I doubt the writers wanted to create something more here. The art is solid here, with Carlo Barberi taking care of the pencils as he does on plenty of the issues of this run of Deadpool. We actually get a lot of face time with Wade Wilson here, which is pretty cool to see, sometimes you forget about the guy under the mask. But given the amount of action in this issue, we don't get any big moments that take advantage of the art fully, still the art is done exceptionally well for what it needs to do. 

So while the issue is stronger in comedy, it still holds up pretty well, especially knowing what comes next from this story, it is worth reading on. And while the doctor parody joke is pretty funny, it might be lost on a few readers. Not the best Deadpool issue or story by any means, but not exactly the worst one out there. Worth a read for the bigger picture for all Deadpool fans.

So there you have it another book down on this Valentine week thing I am doing here. That Thing with the Laser Swords...

Star Wars is back, whether you like it or not, it has taken over again. And while I can and completely understand how someone could potential not be a fan of Star Wars, I ask this, how can you not be a Star Wars fan?  Okay Jar Jar was awful and the prequels for the most part sucked, but there is so much to love about the Star Wars universe, from bounty hunters to the jedi and sith, the deep lore of this galaxy as well is absolutely fascinating. And as anyone who lives on the internet already knows, The Force Awakens is set to release this December and will not doubt be the biggest hyped movie event of the year. And how else do you keep the legion of fans occupied until then, comic books that's how! Disney and Marvel have teamed up and have launched a few Star Wars series for fans to see stories that take place in between the original trilogy, one book focuses on Princess Leia and another follows Darth Vader. The one I got was one that plays out like a movie of sorts, following the whole casts of heroes from A New Hope. We get Luke, Leia, Han Solo, R2-D2, C-3PO and most importantly, Chewbacca! Love that Wookie. But yeah, we get to see the Rebellion in action against the Empire, a whole slew of adventures before Empire Strikes Back. Which while we are here and on the subject is without question in my mind, the best of the Star Wars films and will be hard pressed to be beat anytime soon. So without further delay, let see if this book is worth all the hype and the avalanche of variants as well (I heard they had about 60 variants for this issue alone). 

While I am a big Star Wars fan, I can't say I am a Star Wars wizard...or jedi in this case. I love the movies, the games and practically everything in between but I don't have the religious kind of devotion to it like some of the fans do, and these are the fans who know EVERYTHING about Star Wars. So I can imagine if anything is even slightly off or out of characters, they will be the first ones to tell you. I got to say, I had a blast reading this one! As a Star Wars fan, I felt that it was handled properly and added some kick ass moments as well, things we didn't get to see in the movies. And it never felt like it was trying to be something more or something different, it kept that classic movie feel to it all.  Written by Jason Aaron, who has been doing some great work with Thor for some years now, he writes all the characters we know and love like the characters that we know and love. This isn't a writer or a creative team deciding new directions or changing the plot up in a ridiculous way, this feels like a Star Wars comic. And thanks to John Cassaday the book looks great, we get to see all are favourite actors back in character and without the wrinkles. There is something timeless about a young smug looking Harrison Ford isn't there? The planets look great as do all the different ships and aliens, everything remains as you would imagine it would and it helps keep that authentic feel to the whole experience.

And while I don't want to nit pick on some of the story elements or anything like that, I will hold my tongue until the next issues. I still had a great time reading this, and I am looking forward to seeing what they do with this story and where it goes. I want to see more Chewbacca kicking ass moments and I would love to see some Boba Fett in the future issues. Yes, I am a Boba Fett fan. With that in mind, give this book a shot if you are a Star Wars fan for sure, you'll love it. If you aren't a fan, nothing here for you, I doubt a comic book will change your mind on a movie franchise.

Editorial: Kill'em All Dead...

There is an old saying...

"The Lord Giveth and the Lord taketh away. 

Blessed be the name of the Lord."

This is Marvel comics today in a nutshell. For every Agent Carter, Avengers 2: Age of Ultron and Unbeatable Squirrel Girl,  you get a company that is very fast and harsh at taking away from the fans. The first family of comics is getting axed, Wolverine is dead and X-Men books are becoming a rarity. And earlier this week I found out that the merc with a mouth is next up on the chopping block, Marvel has decided to kill Deadpool. Arguably the most popular character in comic books today, another series and character that is getting the plug pulled (or pool closed in this case...cause you know Deadpool) because movie rights. And please, just own up to it, you want all your properties back, just say it. I am sick and tired of hearing that these decisions have nothing to do with the movie properties and rights, stop pissing in my ear and telling me it's raining! Marvel is ruining years of stories and characters, for what? Another million on top of that billion dollar box office sales. For crying out loud, Ant-Man is going make you a million dollars! The guy who rides ants is going to make you money! But fuck it, what do fans know? What do I know? I bought AXIS...all nine issues. If disappointment was made into a comic book.

And this is also coming off the news of a Deadpool movie announcement, filming will be in Vancouver later on this year and according to sources, Ryan Reynolds is back as the loud mouth assassin! That is really cool, if they can confirm a rated R rating, I think we can safely say that we will be set. 

Marvel has revealed as well what is going to be going on in the upcoming Secret Wars event. Think multiple universes brought into one world, every single version of all of our favourite heroes, and then they all duke it out until one remains. Like Highlander, there can only be one! Like Royal Rumble, 30 men in the ring and only one gets to main event at Wrestlemania (Let's go Cesaro)! Or like my personal favourite, Lemongrab...

Here is hoping that I am wrong, that this is all smoke and mirrors to a bigger plot secret. While I am not exactly counting down the days to be reading Secret Wars, I will probably be picking it up as it comes out, mainly on pure curiosity of the whole show. Who knows, it could be a beautiful oblivion. And I can guarantee you that it won't be anywhere near as bad as AXIS, you can't even try to be worst. When I read a comic as rushed and as messy as AXIS, trust me, I will let you know. In the meantime, Remender, quit your day job or go back to writing Uncanny X-Force...that was actually a pretty awesome team. 

So I don't know about you, but this bitter sweet pill is getting harder to swallow. But hey, maybe I am old. Perhaps a bit jaded. Or both. Regardless, let me know what you think about the news from Marvel this week, what did you think about all this? Try Not to Make a Nut Pun for this Blog Title...

Which was my mind set going into writing this up in the first place. I mean how do you not? I was thinking about calling it, "A Nut Shot to the Mainstream" or something in that vein. But it's not about the title that we are here, we are here to hear my thoughts and takes on comic books, the ones I love and the other ones that I send to relatives in Chile, so they can be used as fuel for the stove ovens. I am pleased to say there will be no book burning here today, no Jeph Loeb off his rocker here, no today, I would dare say, we got a gem. Out of recent, when I think Marvel, I think of a disappointing and messy cross over event that didn't do anything but magic wand the history of some characters and make others "good". And sure I signed up for Secret Wars, but I am very worried and scarred that this is all leading into a massive big restart on everything. I would rather see Marvel vs DC, Death of Superman and Spider-man Clone Saga again then do another massive restart. The worst thing though is how there is little to no regard for some of the smaller titles, which also happens to be Marvel best work, books like Daredevil, Elektra and Ghost Rider. I get that the Avengers are money makers, but if you ask me, it's the smaller heroes who really make some the best and fun reads every week. And we got a new one, and I hope this series goes to the moon and beyond, we need more series like this, we need more Squirrel Girl. The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl to be exact, by writer Ryan North and artist Erica Henderson! Leave your continuity and canon at the door. 

The short story, this book is a great fun read and if you are looking for some sunshine from your books, then pick this book up. And get the variant covers as well, hell get all the variant covers! Be sure to sign it up to your local store pull list if you can. Let the big wigs at Marvel know that you want more and more books like this! 

The book brings us up to speed with Doreen Green, the Squirrel Girl, who I think was last seen in the pre Marvel Now New Avengers series, so it's been a few years since we have seen her in any of the books, though I could be wrong. She moving out of the attic and going to school, to get an education and make some non squirrel friend. All the while making the grades and fighting bad guys, Squirrel Girl decides to separate her lives and create a secret identity, along with a fancy new theme song to boot. It's has a colourful and upbeat feel to it all around, from panel to panel you just start to fall in love with this book. And does Squirrel Girl look crazy, sure, I guess but it's crazy in a lovable way. While she may not have that supermodel Black Widow or Emma Frost look, you know that Squirrel Girl would actually be tons of fun to hang out with. She is the kind of person who parties all night and goes to Denny's at 5 AM for the grand slam meal. And who wouldn't want a grand slam meal? 

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl feels like a great indy book, and it is even more incredible that is a title from Marvel comics. It pokes fun and some the silliness of past comics and tropes as well, it pokes fun at college student life, it is overall just a great title and I will be damn disappointed if this series gets cancelled or doesn't get the love it deserves. So go out and get that Squirrel Girl! 

That was my Marvel comic for this week, and let it be known that this one beat out a lot other books I wanted to recommend like Daredevil and All-New X-Factor (get those ones as well, they're really good). But I will be posting up later on in the week my DC Comic review which most likely be Batman or something Batman related. Then an update on Glass Prison and how that is coming along, then a look at an indy or smaller publisher comic, might do Wytches or Bitch Planet. And then Friday an editorial about something, not sure yet, I could write something about hockey or wrestling, who knows.
